ITT 2006 - The Structures and Standards of Initial Training for History Teachers in Europe. A Comparative Study

Project partners: Council of Europe, Euroclio, Research Institutes in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, as well as experts from Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland.
The study aims at comparing the tenets, structures and standards of initial training for history teachers in Europe. History teaching plays an important role in acquiring historical consciousness and social skills at all levels of education. This study provides a basis for the discussion on structures and standards of initial training for history teachers. It involves experts from different European countries including the new member states of the European Union who worked on a questionnaire which investigated crucial data about training institutions, teacher trainers, students, curricula, the professional profiles, forms of academic, didactic and practical training, job opportunities and the reputation of the job.
Resulting recommendations went to international organisations in education, to ministries of education and to teacher training institutions.
As a by-product the study aims at developing a network of persons in charge of educational management as well as teacher trainers who in future will participate in establishing adequate European standards in initial training for history teachers.
