ITT-Network

Project partners and individual experts from more than 25 countries are contributing to the comparative study on „Structures and Standards of Initial Training for History Teachers in Europe“. Together with international and national institutions involved in teacher training for history teaches they form the ITT network.

The network started within the framework of the Council of Europe’s work on history teaching. The project on "Learning and Teaching about the history of Europe in the 20th century" built the framework for the first pilot – study on ITT in Europe. 13 countries, member states of the Council of Europe, among them Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia and Spain have contributed to this first study which has been published in 2003 by the Council of Europe Publishing.

 

The Austrian initiative for the promotion of peace, stability and democracy in South East Europe (Enhanced Graz Process) gave opportunity for expanding the network of ITT on the countries of South East Europe. The second pilot study on structures and standards of initial training for history teachers in South East Europe, published in 2004, included all the countries of SEE as well as Moldova and Greece.

The actual comparative study on Structures and Standards on Initial Training for History Teachers is supported by the European Commission in the framework of Socrates programmes 6.1.2 and 6.2 (general activities of observation, analysis and innovation). This study involves experts from countries all over Europe including the new member states of the European Union. Results will be disseminated in the framework of the Council of Europe, EUROCLIO and by a new eJournal of history didactics. Resulting recommendations go to international organisations in education (OECD, UNESCO), to ministries of education and to teacher training institutions.

As a by-product the study aims at developing a network of persons in charge of educational management as well as teacher trainers who in future will participate in establishing adequate European standards in initial training for history teachers.
